By Théodore Chassériau (French; 1819 – 1856)

Us girls, growing up, carry rich inner worlds and many passions. Our dreams are vivid and what we want to become when we ‘grow up’ is as vast and as varied as our souls. Rather than seeking only one accomplishment or achievement, we dream of having realisation in many. To be a chef, and a singer, and a model, and a muse, and a poetess and this and who knows what else. An abundance of seeds and potentials and infinite possibilities.

Yet, as we grow, we come to realise that we did not realise many of them. If any. Our dream of being something grows fainter and fainter and we are not quite sure where did ‘that girl’ get lost.

This is a common sentiment that comes up when I talk to women: a desire to return to that luminous girl self who had no doubts about herself and believed the world was hers.
